Shopping for Clothing
Clothing for babies and young children should be designed to make life easy for them and their carers. Some of the things you can do to
reduce stress and help young children become independent early include:
- Avoid fussy clothing that requires special washing or ironing.
- Choose styles that are easier to get on and off and will fit longer, eg raglan sleeves, elastic waistbands, stretch fabrics.
- Inexpensive, practical clothing avoids stress over spills.
- An old shirt from Dad or the op-shop used as a art smock saves better clothing.
The best clothing to buy depends on your child's age, abilities, your time and priorities, and taste. Here are some things to consider
for each age group.
- Young babies grow so quickly that tight
fitting clothing can fit for just a few weeks. Choose styles and fabrics that make life easier for you and baby. Check buttons, elastic and
other fastenings for safety.
- Toddlers are more interested in what they wear and are learning to
dress themselves. You can encourage independence by letting them choose what
they wear and buying clothing that is easy for them to get on and off.
- Ideally children can fasten and unfasten their clothing,
tie shoelaces (so get velcro fastening shoes if they can't) and get their jumpers and jackets on and off easily.
- Sun protection is important in Australia. Use fun hats and other clothing to
encourage children to cover up.
- Fire safety is important, especially in winter. Ensure clothing
fabrics and design don't put your child at risk.
